No matter what season, it's often hard to keep
our motivation flying high. I can get sidetracked by beautiful
weather, other tasks that aren't top priority and daydreaming.
Don't get me wrong, daydreaming, drinking in sunrises and
sunsets and completing necessary tasks are inspiring, important
and can boost your creativity so don't stop them. Include
these useful tips in your routine to get your motivation where
you'd like it.
Motivational Tips:
- Renew your energy
- Be efficient
- Stay focused
- Find a mentor
- De-stress
- Congratulate yourself
I've learned that when I want to complete something,
the greatest gift I can give myself is to focus and put all
my attention on it. However, I can't focus if I'm not fully
rested. Recently I was reminded of that when I was overworked
and wasn't motivated. Only after I decided to get some R&R
did my mind respond. Back from vacation, I was also back in
the game at full throttle.
If you're depleted or haven't taken some time
for pleasure, relaxation and family, you need to.
Renew your energy:
Get involved in activities that renew your energy.
Like an athlete, your body and mind need to recover from all
that you do. Once you give yourself permission to take necessary
time to re-charge, you'll be better equipped to handle a hectic
schedule.
Be efficient:
When you do work, manage your time efficiently.
You can group similar tasks together to save time. Decide
what your time wasters are and do something about them. If
too much time is spent on the phone or e-mailing, set aside
a specific time of day to make contact with others so you're
not interrupted and can stay focused.
Stay focused:
To keep your focus, remind yourself often of
what your goals and your purpose are and update and evaluate
them. Do you need to switch gears; have your priorities changed?
Any plan needs to be dynamic which means it's flexible and
subject to change if necessary so that you can stay on top
of latest trends, business-know-how and customer needs.
When it comes to your family, you may be the
one that is in charge of planning and keeping track of everyone's
activities. If you are in charge, being flexible, re-evaluating
and knowing what the priorities are for you and your family
are essential to make sure everything is running smoothly.
Find a mentor:
Having a mentor can help you grow and also challenges
you to improve your performance and become more savvy. At
work or in your field of study or interest, be open to suggestions
and input from a reliable source. Getting involved in a group
that facilitates and supports each member can be effective
to help you stay on track with what matters and can also help
you generate new ideas and gain perspective. You can be a
mentor to someone else which will also hone your skills and
keep you from getting rusty.
De-stress:
You are less effective if you're stressed out
so introduce de-stressors into your life and work. If you
spend long hours at a computer, give yourself stretch breaks.
Enroll in a neighborhood yoga or aerobics class to relieve
your stress and also build stamina and resilience. Any healthy
activity will do if it's effective at reducing your stress,
so find what's effective for you and do it.
Congratulate yourself:
Make sure you give yourself credit each day for a job well done
or for completing a task. You are your own cheerleader. A frequent
complaint that I've heard from my clients about their jobs is
that praise and recognition are sorely missing. We like to know
that we've done well and are valuable to the company. Your boss
or business associates may not acknowledge your efforts but
you have to. Give yourself a pat on the back to keep you motivated
and looking forward to the possibilities that lay ahead.
